They emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1903 and settled there. Magnús worked in house construction until he died of pneumonia. Magnús Jörgen took over from his father and became the head of the household, but only for a short time because he fell off a rooftop in Winnipeg and died. Jórunn looked forward to a dark future: debts piling up with a large group of children. But then others in the city came to her aid under the leadership of Baldwin L. Baldwinsson’s son. A charity concert was held in the city to help the family and Jórunn was able to move the children to Riverton and settle there.
