Unmarried and childless.
He emigrated west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 with his mother and siblings and spent the first year in Kinmount. From there he moved to New Iceland and then on to N. Dakota. There he bought land with his brother Jónas, but moved to Winnipeg instead of living on the land.
