Jósef emigrated west to Ontario, Canada in 1873 and was there the first winter. He moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1874 and lived here and there in Wisconsin until 1880 when he moved to Winnipeg, Canada. He ran a meat store for a few years in town, but then moved to the Thingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan in 1888. Margrét emigrated west with her widowed mother, Anna Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir, and four siblings to New Iceland in 1876.
