Juren was the son of Sigurður Þorleifsson and Hjálmfríður Hjálmarsdóttir. Sigurður immigrated to the United States in 1884, first to N. Dakota, but then he went to Spanish Fork, Utah and lived there all his life. He is registered as Thor Leifson in Utah. Hjálmfríður left the Westmann Islands for the West in 1891. Juren completed primary school education in Spanish Fork and technical school education from the International Correspondence School in Scranton, Pennsylvania on April 10, 1913. He was in the First World War 1917-19. He took up carpentry and worked at it all his life in Utah. He was actively involved in Mormon work and was for a time a bishop in the Church of Latter-Day Saints in Utah. He cultivated ties to Iceland and his Icelandic origins all his life.
