Kári was the son of Ásmundur Jóhannsson and his first wife, Sigríður Jónasdóttir, who lived in Winnipeg. There, Kári attended the Jón Bjarnarson School and finished his studies there in 1924. He then immediately went to work for his father in the construction industry in the city. María was the daughter of Hallgrímur Metúsalemsson and Kristjana Vigfúsdóttir, who came west with their children in 1913 and settled in the Lundar settlement.
