Haraldur came west with his parents, Jóhannes Ólafsson and Sigríður Jónsdóttir, to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1882. He was with them there the first years, but in 1889 he bought land with his father in the Argyle Settlement. They lived there for some time before moving back to Winnipeg and living there.
