Karl was the son of Guðjón Þorkelsson and Lilja S. Jónsdóttir and grew up in Marshland, Manitoba at his parents home. He was the first student admitted to the new Jón Bjarnason School in Winnipeg in 1913. He studied there until 1916 and in the fall of that year he attended Wesley College and graduated in 1917. He worked as farmhand in the rural community around Langruth until 1924, when he began studies at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, graduating in the spring of 1926. In the fall he attended Manitoba Normal School from where he graduated a year later. He completed his B.A and obtained a Teacher´s Certificate in 1930. He was hired as principal at the Arborg Middle School in 1927-1930 and principal at the Morden Collegiate Institute 1930-1959.
