Kjartan came west to Canada in 1913 with his parents, Ólafur Jónasson and Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir, and siblings. They settled in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) and there Kjartan grew up. He later became a merchant and shipowner in Grand Rapids, Manitoba. He visited Iceland in 1966.
