Jón and Kristbjörg came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with their daughter Ása. Their son Bergþór Ólafur had come west with his wife in 1886. Jón went west to the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan the same year and the couple lived with Ása and Tómas Pálsson the first winter. The next spring, he took land in the community.
