Jóhann came west with son Jón Elías in 1874. They went to Ontario and Jóhann started exploring. He went to Nova Scotia and liked it, but in 1875 he returned to Iceland and stayed there until the spring of 1876. Then the couple came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with sons Jóhann and Kristján. Jón Elías joined them there. They moved to Mikley, New Iceland, where he lived in 1902, but then they moved due to flooding in Lake Winnipeg. They took land in the Lundar settlement and lived there after that. The name Straumfjörður came about because at the age of three, Jóhann moved with his parents to Straumfjörðurtunga in Miklaholtshreppur.
