They came west in 1877 and first lived in Wisconsin. They soon moved to the Lyon County Settlement in Minnesota where they lived for some time but then moved next to Minneota where Jónatan worked as a salesman. Life’s road led them to New Ark, S. Dakota where Jónatan worked as a salesman for a number of years. Jónatan soon saw the benefits of educating his children. Karl graduated from university and the twins, Jónína and Jóhanna, were the first Icelandic girls in the West to complete a university degree in North America.
