Kristján Jónsson was born in the Argyle Settlement in Manitoba on September 25, 1890. He died in Toronto on October 7, 1963. He was known as Dr. Kristjan Jonsson Austmann in the west.

Kristján was the son of Jón Ólafsson, poet and editor, and Þóra Þorvarðardóttir. Þóra married Jón Jónsson Austmann in 1891 and he raised Kristján as his own. Kristján studied medicine and practiced in various places. Ólöf was the daughter of Þorstein Oddsson from Langanes and Rakelar Sigfúsdóttir who came west in 1888.
