Kristján emigrated west to Canada in 1882 and settled in Pembina, N. Dakota. He worked in a drug store for a while but then moved to Winnipeg. He worked there for 12 years in a hardware store and then began a partnership with the New York Life Insurance C0. He sold life insurance until his death. He was greatly respected in Winnipeg and always helped his countrymen near and far.
