Kristjana came west to Canada in 1874 with her parents, Helgi Sigurðsson and Guðbjörg Sveinsdóttir. Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888. There he worked mainly building houses, but in 1907 he moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land in the Foam Lake community.
