Laufey’s parents were Baldvin Jónsson and Sigurbjörg Sigurðardóttir, early settlers in the Fljóts settlement. Eiríkur was the son of Jón Jónsson Austmann and Guðlaugur Halldórsdóttir. He grew up in the Akra settlement in N. Dakota, moved with his parents to the Roseau settlement in Minnesota, and then to Icelandic River (Íslendingafljót) in 1906. He was a farmer in New Iceland but then moved west to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1918 and settled in Elfros.
