Laufey was the daughter of Friðrik Guðmundson and his first wife Guðrún Jakobsdóttir. She grew up in the home of her father’s brother, Reverend Jón Guðmundsson at Nes in Norðfjörður. She completed her teacher’s degree at Flensborgarskóla and taught in Iceland 1908-1910. She went to England and met her husband there. He was the governor for the Netherlands in Sumatra for some time. They lived in the Netherlands from the 1950s.
