Helgi’s parents, Jón Jónsson Hornfjörður and Guðleif Árnadóttir, lived in New Iceland, first in the Ísafold settlement but moved to the Framnes settlement in 1901. They then moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1922. There, Helgi fished but then turned to business and worked in retail. Later, he started farming near Elfros, where he served on the school board and worked in the local farmers’ cooperatives.
