Þorgils was the son of Finnbogi Þorgilsson and Málfríðir Jónsdóttir, pioneer settlers in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) in 1886. Þorgils learned accounting and worked as a bookkeeper in Lundar.
