Lilja was the daughter of Hallur Hallsson and Guðrún Bjarnadóttir in Hringvera in Skagafjörður. Lilja came west in 1883. Þorsteinn practiced fishing both on the coast of Iceland and in the North Sea. He came west to the United States in 1878 and first went to Baltimore. From there, he made his way to New Iceland, where he lived after that. His brother Stefán, who came west in 1874, took up land in the Fljóts settlement, which he called Hól. Þorsteinn took over the land in 1880.
