Lilja was the daughter of Jón Pálsson and Una Friðný Jónasdóttir, early settlers in the Geysir settlement. Lilja graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1936 and continued her music studies at the Toronto Conservatory of Music. She received many awards while there. She became a music teacher in New Iceland, where she trained both adult and children’s and youth choirs. Halldór was the son of Gunnlaugur Guðmundsson and Sigríður Kristjónsdóttir. He was a farmer in New Iceland and also ran a sawmill in the Hnausa settlement.
