It is unclear when Magdalena came west. Guðmundur Magnús traveled in 1900 from Búrfell in Húnavatnssýsla together with Jóhannes Pétursson and his wife, Salóme Jónatansdóttir. It is therefore likely that Magdalena joined the group and traveled with them to Winnipeg. Guðmundur spent the first year in N. Dakota but moved north to the Geysir Settlement in 1901. Jóhannes went there with his family in 1906. Reverend Jón Bjarnason married Guðmundur and Magdalena in the settlement and they lived there.
