Magnús Bogi Jónsson was born in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota on April 9, 1904. He had the name Magnus B Johnson in the west.

Magnús Bogi was the son of Jón Jónsson and Guðbjörg Guðmundsdóttir, early settlers in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. He grew up in the settlement and early showed a great interest in farming. He enrolled at North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo and earned a B.S. degree in Agricultural Science in 1931 and an M.S. degree in the same subject from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1942. He taught at the school for some time before moving to Washington, D.C. where he got a position with the United States Department of Agriculture. It lasted until 1969, when he retired due to age. Carolina was the daughter of Jóhann Gunnar Hall, a farmer in Edinburg, N. Dakota, and his wife, Hosianna Guðbjörg Jósefsdóttir.
