Magnús Jóhannesson was born in Winnipeg in 1887. He died in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in 1947. He had the name Magnus Gillis in the west.
Spouse: 1914 Aðalbjörg Jakobsdóttir Vopni b. October 18, 1890 in N. Múlasýsla.
Children: 1. Magnús Roy b. 1916 2. Bertel Valdimar b. 1921 3. Edwin b. January 20, 1924 4. Maríus Leonard b. 1927, d. same year.
Magnús’ parents, Jóhannes Gíslason and Valgerður Stefánsdóttir, emigrated west to Winnipeg in 1887. He moved with them to Duluth, Minnesota in 1892 and from there in the spring of 1902 to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. When he finished school, he worked as a logger in Ontario, but in 1906 he settled in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan near Wynyard. Nothing came of farming there, but he bought other land in the settlement a few years later and built a house and lived there until his death. Aðalbjörg was the daughter of Jakob Ágúst Jónsson Vopni and Arnbjörg Jónsdóttir from Vopnafjörður.
