Magnús Kjartan Magnússon was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla in 1872, d. in San Diego, California on April 14, 1930. He was known as Kjartan Magnússon in the west.

Kjartan came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 with his parents, Magnús Guðmundsson and Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir. They settled in N. Dakota and from there, Kjartan moved west to the Pacific coast at the turn of the century. Svanhildur came west in 1881 with her parents, Jón Gíslason and Þóra Halldórsdóttir. Kjartan and Svanhildur lived in Seattle in 1905, moved back to N. Dakota after a few years, then moved to San Diego. After Kjartan’s death, Svanhildur moved to N. Dakota and lived in Akra.
