Margrét came west with her parents, Eyjólfur Kristjánsson and Lukka Gísladóttir, in 1878. They settled in New Iceland, but moved from there in 1881 to N. Dakota. Árni emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 with his mother, Ólöf Einarsdóttir, stepfather, and siblings. They settled in New Iceland, where Árni’s brother Einar had come a year earlier. Árni and Einar moved south to N. Dakota in 1879 and bought land east of Cavalier in the so-called Carlisle Settlement. They lived there together with their families until 1895 when Einar sold his share. Two years later, Árni sold his land and moved to the Park Settlement. Margrét continued to live there after Árni died.
