Margrét came west to Canada in 1903, with her 9-year-old son. The daughters had come west earlier. Margrét first spent a little over a year in Winnipeg, but in 1904 she moved west to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) and took land near Leslie. Jón grew up there and later became a farmer in the countryside.
