Jónas and Margrét came west to Wisconsin in 1873. They first lived near Milwaukee, but later moved to a Norwegian settlement where Jónas rented land from a Norwegian farmer. Margrét died there a few weeks after giving birth to Ólafur in the winter of 1878.
