Sigmundur and María moved to Minnesota in the United States in 1883 and settled in Duluth. He was successful and they lived there 18 years. They moved from Duluth to Selkirk, Manitoba in 1901 but then took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1908. There lived Sigurður Hákonarson who had come west from Húnvatnssýsla in 1887, 68 year of age. Sigmundur inherited the old man’s land and other property.
