Steinunn Jóhannsdottir and her husband, Thorgrimur Jonsson. fostered Maria and brought her to New Iceland in 1876. Maria was the daughter of Steinunn´s sister. A young teenage girl, Maria was permitted to move to work and here she met her husband to be, Hannes Asmundsson. Only few years after their marriage, he was taken seriously ill and passed away in 1893. She returned to her home in the Icelandic River Settlement where she died two years later.
