María grew up Lyon County with her parents, Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson and Guðný Þorkelsdóttir. Metúsalem came west to Minnesota in 1879 with his parents, Eyjólfur Þorsteinsson and Þorbjörg Jósepsdóttir. They also settled in Lyon County where Metúsalem grew up. He moved to Marshall and worked in a wheat mill until 1912. The family then moved to Massillon, Ohio.
