Marteinn grew up in the Fljóts Settlement, worked for awhile at a store in Hnausa, and then bought land in the Víðir-Sandy Hills Settlement and moved there in 1909. He sold his land in 1919 and moved to Arborg. Þorbjörg emigrated west with her parents, Finnbogi Finnbogason and Agnes Jónatansdóttir, in 1883. They settled in the Hnausa Settlement at Finnbogastaðir.
