Matthías was the son of Guðmundur Elías Guðmundsson and Guðrún Steingrímsdóttir who came west with their children in 1900. They lived for two years in N. Dakota, moved north to Manitoba and lived for another two years in Winnipegosis. They moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and lived in Foam Lake. Matthías was a farmer and served in the Canadian army 1915-1919. For his performance in World War I, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
