Nanna Jóhannsdóttir was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla on November 3, 1882.

Nanna came west to N. Dakota in 1883 with her parents, Jóhann Einarsson and Elín Benonísdóttir, and moved east to Duluth, Minnesota in 1884. She grew up there, went to primary and secondary school and then graduated as a teacher. She taught in the city from 1905 to 1918, then moved west to Seattle, Washington, where she picked up the thread again and taught there until 1953.
