Norman was the son of Jón Guðnason Stevens, ship’s captain in Gimli, and Jóhanna Stefanía Hansdóttir. Margrét was the daughter of Björn Blöndal and his wife Björg Bjarnadóttir in Winnipeg. She was taken in as a foster child by the couple Joseph and Jóhanna Guðrún Skaptason and took their last name. Norman and Margrét lived in Gimli in New Iceland.
