Oddný grew up in Vestmannaeyjar, but Eiríkur moved there when he was young. They were both in Copenhagen at the same time where Oddný studied midwifery. They married there and moved to Seyðisfjorður. They moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 and later lived in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan.
