Oddur Vigfússon was born in N. Múlasýsla on February 24, 1879. He died in Minneota, Minnesota on March 10, 1950. He took the name Oddur or Otto Anderson in Minnesota.

Oddur came west to Minnesota in 1880 with his father, Vigfús Andrésson, future stepmother, Sigríður Jóhannsdóttir, and siblings. He went to school, was well educated, and became a salesman at the O. G. Anderson Cash Store. He worked in real estate and bought land in McLean County, N. Dakota, which he divided into lots and offered for sale to his fellow countrymen in Minneota through the “Anderson Land Company”.
