Ólafur Hallsson was born on October 1, 1885 in Seyðisfjörður in N. Múlasýsla. He died in Manitoba in 1974.

Ólafur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Hall Ólafsson and Guðrún Kristjana Björnsdóttir in 1903. He returned to Iceland in 1907 and worked at a store in Reykjavík. He came west again with his wife and two children in 191o and opened a store in Eriksdale, Manitoba the same year and ran it until 1953. He built the first residential building where the village of Eriksdale was born. He was very involved in social issues, sat on the school committee, parish committee and was on the board of the Icelandic National League for seven years. He wrote many songs and wrote articles for Western Icelandic newspapers and magazines.
