Ólafur was the son of Jónas Ólafsson and his wife Margrét Ingjaldsdóttir who settled in Lincoln County in Minnesota in 1880. Þóra was the daughter of Sigurður Bjarnason and his wife Sesselja Andrésdóttir who came west in 1880. Ólafur and Þóra lived on their farm in Swede Prairie Township in Yellow Medicine County in 1910 but then moved elsewhere in Minnesota. Ólafur owned a hardware store in the village of Deer Creek in Otter Tail County, Minnesota in 1930.
