Ólafur came west in 1887 at two years of age to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his father, step-mother, and siblings. They settled in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota. There Ólafur grew up and worked in various agricultural jobs. He moved in 1903 to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land near the town of Elfros.
