Ólafur Þórður Anderson was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on October 27, 1890. He was known as Olafur Th Anderson in the west. He died in an auto accident in Manitoba on October 6, 1958.

Ólafur was the son of Sigurður Árnason (Anderson in the west) and Ólína B Ólafsdóttir in Selkirk. He completed his primary education in Selkirk, entered Wesley College in 1909, graduated from there with a B.A. degree in 1923 and an M. A. degree from the University of Manitoba in 1915. He may have been the first to complete such a degree from that department. He was appointed a teacher at Wesley College in Winnipeg in 1917 and later appointed head of the Arts & Science Department at the school.
