Ólafur grew up in the home of his parents, Jón Pétursson and Ingunn Ólafsdóttir, in the Hallson Settlement in N. Dakota. He moved with them to Alberta, Canada in 1889. He attended school in Winnipeg and was well-written and poetic. He became the editor of Heimskringla newspaper from 1917 to 1919, then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and lived there for several years, working as a house painter. They later moved to Alberta.
