Ólafur Þorsteinsson was born in Árnessýsla on January 1, 1831. He died in N. Dakota on January 19, 1910.

Ólafur came west alone in 1877 and took land in Árnes in Markland, New Scotland (Nova Scotia). Elín arrived a year later with the children and Ólafur’s sister, Snjáfríði. They moved west to the Red River Valley in 1882 and settled in the Pembina Settlement in N. Dakota where they remained.
