Óli Jóhannesson was born on July 12, 1880 in Parry Sound, Ontario in Canada. He died on June 27, 1957 in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. He has the name Oli J. Halldorson in the west.

Óli was the son of Jóhannes Halldórsson and Anna Hólmfríður Sigurðardóttir of Eyjafjarðarsýsla who came west to Ontario in 1878. He grew up in their home in the Hallson Settlement in N. Dakota and moved with his father to Roseau, Minnesota in 1895 and then to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1907. There Óli took land. Lára was the daughter of Lárus Goðmundsson Goodman and Ragnheiður Kristjánsdóttir who came west from Skagafjörður in 1883.
