Ólína came west in 1900 with her widowed mother, Kristbjörg Jóhannesdóttir. They traveled to Manitoba and settled in Gimli. Gísli came to the West in 1888 with his parents, Benedikt Bjarnason and Guðrún Gísladóttir. The family settled in Gimli, Manitoba. There Gísli married Ólína and they lived in Gimli. Gísli was a fisherman and a carpenter. He was interested in town affairs and sat on the town council for four years. Ólína was also interested in the issues of the people of Gimli, she was always in the women’s club of the Sambandssafnaðarins of Gimli, its president for a while.
