Óskar was the son of Gunnlaugur Gunnlaugsson and Guðríður Agnes Jóhannsdóttir from Húnavatnssýsla. Jónína was the daughter of Björn Jónsson and Sólveig Sveinbjarnadóttir from Borgarfjarðarsýsla, who came west in 1886. Óskar and Jónína moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land in the Wynyard settlement in 1910.
