Óskar Guðmundur Sigurðsson was born at Icelandic River (Íslendingafljót) in New Iceland on March 16, 1898.

Óskar’s parents, Sigurður Guðmundsson and Ingveldur Jósefsdóttir, came west to Manitoba in 1876 and took land in Icelandic River (Íslendingafljót). They lived there until 1903, then moved to the Framnes settlement, near Arborg. Óskar took over his parents’ farm and lived there until death.
