Jón grew up in his father’s house in the Lundar Settlement and soon started working for himself. At a young age, he got a job at Joe Halldorson’s store in Lundar. He bought horses and a wagon, filled the wagon with all kinds of necessities from the store, and traveled to remote places by Lake Manitoba and sold goods. In the winter he used a sleigh. He usually spent a few days on the expedition and then stayed with the farmers. He later worked for the CNR railway company.
