Pétur was the son of Hjálmur Pétursson, member of Allthing, and Helga Árnadóttir. He graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1895 and came west across the ocean with Jónína in 1899. They were in Winnipeg the first year, then she went to Duluth, Minnesota where she lived until the end of 1902, before returning to Winnipeg. They moved to Chicago in January 1903, where Pétur went to graduate school, he was ordained a pastor there on June 21, 1903. In the following years, Pétur served congregations in Canada, settling in Markerville, Alberta, where he also farmed. For the last 18 years of his life, he was blind. Jónína worked as a seamstress and in Alberta she was the secretary of Vonarinn, the Icelandic women’s club in the community.
