Pétur Vigfússon was born on March 25, 1862 in N. Múlasýsla. He died in Minnesota on December 14, 1918. He took the name Peterson in the west.

Pétur emigrated west with his mother, Halldóra Jónsdóttir and his brother, Gunnlaugur, in 1876. They first lived in the Lyon County Settlement, but Pétur bought land in the Lincoln County Settlement. He moved to Ivanhoe in 1903. María was the daughter of Þorsteinn Sigurðsson and Guðný Ólafsdóttir.
