Róbert was the son of Guðmundur Guðmundsson and Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir who came west to Ontario, Canada in 1874. They lived in Washago, Ontario until mid-1875, then moved east to Markland, Nova Scotia. From there, they moved to Duluth, Minnesota in 1881. In 1910, Robert was a cashier at a railroad company in Duluth, from there he moved west to Seattle. He soon returned to Duluth, because in 1920 he was an accountant there and in 1930 a division manager in a dairy in the city.
